Attractions |
We are situated on the Somerset levels close
to the Mendip Hills and the Quantock Hills where there are
many places to visit. Here's just a few ideas from what's
on offer most of the year round. |
The area is well-served with high quality golf courses, the
nearest being the
Isle of Wedmore Golf Club which is within a mile and is
highly recommended. Within easy reach are the Wells,
Mendip
Spring, Burnham
& Berrow, and Brean
courses |
Wells, the smallest city in Britain, with
its beautiful Cathedral is only 10 miles away. It is well
worth a visit to see the magnificent Gothic tour-de-force
of Wells Cathedral; the adjoining Vicars Close, a 14th century
street; and the Bishop's Palace, medieval moated home to the
Bishop of Bath and Wells. |
Cheddar is famous not only for cheese; it
lies at the mouth of a spectacular gorge in the Mendip Hills
with panoramic views from the cliff-top
walk. Within the gorge are equally spectacular caves.
Artifacts have been found in the caves back to stone age times.
The caves are now illuminated and are open to the public.
|
Wookey Hole - Britain's most spectacular
showcaves and home to the infamous Witch of Wookey. A guided
tour is followed by a visit to the Victorian papermill where
visitors can watch papermakers making handmade paper. |
The Somerset Levels are an ornithologist's paradise; an internationally
recognised wetland environment. Only two miles away is the
site of the historic battle
of Sedgemoor, which was waged in 1685 during "Monmouth's
Rebellion". The area is criss-crossed with footpaths and public
rights of way for the enjoyment of walkers and lovers of the
countryside. See the "Angel of the South", a 20
foot-high wicker sculpture. |
The maritime City of Bristol and The
Mall at Cribbs Causeway are easily wthin
travelling distance. The centre-piece of Cribbs Causeway is
a futuristic indoor two-level shopping mall, opened in 1998
and containing over 135 shops including a large John Lewis
and a Marks and Spencer, over a dozen cafes and restaurants. |
Freshwater and fly-fishing is available on many local lakes
and rivers all within easy reach. |
Historic Bath with its Roman baths and amazing
architecture, together with an excellent range of boutiques
and bric-a-brac shops is only 30 miles distant. |
November Illuminated Guy Fawkes Carnivals;
a centuries-old tradition of Illuminated Carnivals. There
is nothing to beat the spectacle and scale of these dazzling
illuminated processions parading through the streets of the
local towns and comprising as many as a hundred giant floats,
each one pulsating with music and aglow with the lights from
thousands of coloured light bulbs, fantastically coloured
costumes and special effects to create a magical evening of
entertainment. |
The nearby Bath
& West Showground is the venue
for host of major show events throughout the year, culminating
in the Royal Bath and West Show in early June. |
Ashton Windmill is just over a mile away.
This unique 18th century flour mill stands on the "Isle
of Wedmore", a ridge giving commanding views of Cheddar
Gorge, the Somerset Levels and Brent Knoll. A windmill is
mentioned on this site as far back as 1317. Although it last
worked in 1927, the mill has been carefully restored. |
There is an excellent range of eating establishments, from
traditional pub food to 'A La Carte' restaurants within a
10 minute drive of Poplar Farm. |
Some 11 miles away lies Glastonbury - unique,
sacred, spell-binding. It is a small town steeped in folklore
and magical fantasies. Nearby are: the Tor, a whaleback hill
formation with a tower on top, once part of a church dedicated
to the Archangel Michael; and the ruins of a great medieval
abbey. |
